A Disabled Cause Foundation, a pet project initiated by the Publisher, Applause D in Nigeria, May 2005 to reach out to Disabled undergraduates in Institutions of higher learning whose mobility only is possible with wheel chairs and a lot of infrastructure for their up keep and well-being needs your help.
Most are still using hand made dilapidated tri-cycles (as can be seen from the pictures inset) and in these schools they attend there are no disabled facilities like toilets, room facilitites, buses that could help their situation. They go through hell daily to tidy up themselves, to dress and to rush for lectures.
Being in Europe for sometime now with my own fourteen year old son, Christian Onuchukwu, also handicapped and seeing the difference in both treatment and facilities available here for people like these ones, increased my pain and passion for them and this greatly motivated me and my team to initiate this move to lend a helping hand to them wherever possible we can. My son Christian Onuchukwu, deaf and dumb from birth can now hear with his two ears, attending normal school now for speech developement and learning, because he has this opportunity of coming to Europe for coclear Implant operation, a facility rarely heard of in our country.
I therefore passionately appeal to you to come with us to make this society work. If you would wish to personally reach out to any one of them, we will be too glad to give you the name and contact. The society which Bro. Darlington Onuchukwu started in the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede Owerri functions with the name, Physically Challenged Students Association under the distinguished Chairmanship of the then Dean, Student Affairs Division of the school Chief Dr. Obioha(his tenure has elapsed), while Chief Chuks Nwogwugwu is the Secretary.
Presently, a more vibrant, down-to-earth achiever Dean, student Affairs has replaced the former, He is Mr. Desmond Oparaku ,Both can be reached for inquiries regarding the authenticity of this project and for assistance to these students should any person wish to make a direct contribution to the school for these handicapped students.
There is also an urgent need for a specialised handicapped buses, such as we have here in Europe, to facilitate their convenience in transporting them to and fro the city as well as a special hostel block or at least a wing in the available hostels that will be equiped with Physically Challenged infrastructure for their convenience.
I am sure the management of this school will welcome organisations, groups or persons willing to construct such hostels, donate such facilities either through us or direct to the school for these ones.
As a result of my son's condition, the activities of this society slowed down a bit but from 2009 till date we have continually sent a lot of wheel chairs to these students and other destitutes in and around Owerri(See the PDF)
